“When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth.” Psalm 104:30 Dear St. Anthony’s Parish & Trinity School Families, When St. Anthony’s was founded in 1909 it was the Parish of St. Anthony and the Holy Ghost. The image painted above our high altar is a beautiful representation of Pentecost. We have been enjoying this image for years. The long standing ties of this Parish to the Holy Spirit makes this year’s feast of Pentecost a beautiful moment to celebrate a community renewal of St. Anthony’s Parish & Trinity School. We will be celebrating a renewal of faith and community this Pentecost with an outdoor Mass (weather willing) and a light luncheon. We are inviting everyone in our Parish & School Community to join with us in celebrating. Come to the 11am Mass, stay for lunch and a celebration of renewal. Our celebration includes a light lunch of hot dogs, chips, drinks & cookies. I will be taking this opportunity to introduce myself and finally greet all the members of this community. As a sign of our renewal we are asking every family in the Parish and the School to bring a candle to be lit from the paschal candle and arranged together as a visual mark of our renewal. Candles will be provided by the Parish. You will be able to pick up your families Renewal Candle after the Parish weekend Masses on May 15th & 16th and after the week day Masses. On June 14, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, Bishop Thomas Daly will officially open a diocesan Year of the Eucharist. The idea for the year began before the COVID-19 crisis, and as the pandemic unfolded parishes were shut, regular access to the sacraments was suspended. Bishop Daly and your pastors heard from you, the lay faithful of the diocese, about your hunger for the Eucharist during this time. As we return to Mass it seems providential that plans had already begun for a Eucharistic year.

How to write the Governor A few recommended principles if you decide to write a letter: As Catholics, our faith is not optional, it is essential. We as Catholics do not want to risk anyone's health, we strive to be citizens who care for our neighbors. We are seeking more access to the sacraments in Eastern Washington because of the local realities of our region, we believe the Governor should take that into consideration as plans continue to be developed. Be cordial, if you haven't had a chance to see the letter from the Bishops of Washington on Civility in politics now is a good time to read it.

The Light of Christ! Thanks be to God. In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tasted by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory and honor at the revelation of a Jesus Christ. (1st St. Peter 1:6-7) Happy Easter to all of you and to your families! Fr. José

For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord, you are light. Live as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8 In this time of global pandemic, we take our mission very seriously, we continue to support catechists, parents, and others in the Church and beyond, as they grow in their understanding of the religious potential of children. We believe the most valuable service that we can offer during this time is to help families pray with their children at home and so continue to assist children and adults live a common religious experience in which the religious values of childhood, primarily those values of contemplation and enjoyment of God are celebrated. This page it to support children parents and families at home and catechists in their communities and parishes and schools. We are adding to it weekly (sometimes daily)! Everyone, Please see the attached update from Bishop Daly. It is currently being translated into Spanish and when that is complete I will send it out. In the MEMO, bishop mentions making a perfect act of contrition. On March 20th, Pope Francis live streamed a message regarding the issue of people who cannot get to confession because of the COVID-19 lockdown. The Holy Father reminded us of the traditional Catholic teaching on the power of making a perfect act of contrition. He remarked, "This is the right time, the opportune moment. An act of contrition done well, and our souls will become white like the snow." What is a perfect act of contrition? The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that perfect contrition is present when our sadness for sin results from our love for God above all else. In short, perfect contrition is hatred for sin because we love God. On the other hand, imperfect contrition is the result of fear, which is to say, I am sad for my sins because I am afraid of Hell. One type of contrition results from love. The other results from fear. When we go to sacramental confession, imperfect contrition is sufficient to receive the pardon of our sins. However, in extraordinary circumstances when we cannot get to confession, we can make an act of perfect contrition which is sufficient to have our sins forgiven. It is important to note that a perfect act of contrition includes the intention to receive sacramental confession at the very first opportunity. All mortal sins, forgiven through the act of perfect contrition, must be mentioned to the priest in confession as soon as possible. The fact that we can always make an act of perfect contrition in a situation like the COVID-19 pandemic is very consoling. At this time of plague and being unable to go to the Sacrament of Penance, Pope Francis instructs us to make a perfect act of contrition and promise God, “I will go to confession afterward, but forgive me now. And immediately you will return to a state of grace with God." This generosity on the part of God has been needed at various times throughout history. In the plagues of Middle Ages, in the midst of various wars, and in places where priests were scarce, the ability to make a perfect act of contrition was a healing salve for sinners in love with God. That same healing salve is available to all of us at this difficult time of pandemic. How to Make a Perfect Act of Contrition Call to mind your sins. Reflect on God’s tremendous and unconditional love for you and how your sin offends that love. Express your sorrow for disappointing God. Make the intention to go to sacramental confession as soon as it is possible for you with the intention of mentioning any mortal sins forgiven through your perfect act of contrition. Pray an Act of Contrition. Act of Contrition O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. Please share this information as you see fit. Let me know if you have any questions. God bless, Fr. Connall
FORMED Available for All in the Diocese The Augustine Insititute has extended the FORMED platform to all Catholics in the Diocese of Spokane for the next 40 days. FORMED is a streaming platform similar to Netflix but with Catholic content. Some parishes already pay for this service for their parishioners and can continue to log in as normal. For those who don't have FORMED this is an opportunity to learn more, be inspired and grow in faith. Informational series like Presence (see the trailer below) will help your desire for the Eucharist grow, movies like Clare and Francis will help you be inspired by the saints, and the children's animated features can help your children learn the faith while watching TV.
